Helping data professionals adapt to a rapidly changing technology landscape.

The technology landscape for data professionals is shifting fast. AI, cloud platforms, and new analytical tools are redefining what it means to work with data. Deep expertise in a single tool or role is not enough. The practitioners who thrive will be the ones who build broad adaptable skill sets across AI, data science, data analytics, and cloud technologies.

I've spent over 30 years working across data engineering, AI, machine learning, data strategy and cloud architecture. I've written certification study guides for Google Cloud, built courses for LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, and Pearson/Coursera, and helped organizations and practitioners navigate this evolving landscape. The through line: helping data professionals build the skills that matter now and the adaptability to keep up with what's next.

Below you'll find my books and courses, organized by topic. Whether you're preparing for a Google Cloud certification, sharpening your SQL skills, or developing expertise in AI and data strategy, browse what's relevant and start building.

Experience & Education

Over three decades building data systems, leading engineering teams, and translating complex technology into practical skills. My career has spanned data analytics technology companies, healthcare, biotech research, and consulting across financial services, manufacturing, and retail.

Career

2020 – Present
Technical Education & Data Analytics Technology
Currently a Principal Technical Account Manager at Hydrolix, working at the intersection of high-performance time-series analytics and customer success. In parallel, I run Sullivan Learning Group, creating courses and certification study guides for Google Cloud, data science, and AI through LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, Pearson/Coursera, O'Reilly, and Wiley.
Data Analytics Cloud Technical Education
2015 – 2020
Principal Engineer & Architect
Held principal engineering and architecture roles at New Relic and PEAK6 Technologies. At New Relic, designed observability platform architecture serving massive-scale telemetry data. At PEAK6, served as lead data architect on the modernization of an insurance processing platform, redesigning data systems to handle the scale and reliability demands of a regulated industry. Both roles centered on high-throughput, high-reliability data systems where getting the architecture wrong had immediate, measurable consequences.
Observability Insurance Data Engineering
2013 – 2015
Enterprise Architecture, Healthcare
Enterprise Architect at Cambia Health Solutions, one of the largest health plans in the Pacific Northwest. Led data architecture strategy across the organization, bridging clinical, actuarial, and operational data systems in a heavily regulated environment.
Healthcare Enterprise Architecture
2004 – 2013
Biotech Research & Bioinformatics
Spent nine years as a Research Scientist at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech, building computational systems for large-scale genomic and biomedical data analysis. Also co-founded Microbe Analytics, applying data science techniques to microbiome research. This period shaped my approach to working with complex, high-dimensional datasets where domain expertise is inseparable from the technical work.
Biotech Bioinformatics Research
1996 – 2004
Data Warehousing & BI Consulting
Started my career in data warehousing and business intelligence consulting at Ballston Group and CRT Inc., building analytical systems for clients largely in financial services, manufacturing, and retail. This is where I learned that the hardest part of data work isn't the technology; it's understanding the business well enough to build systems people actually use.
